Question:

When were hammer, gas and injection first used?

For a graphics project, I need to know when, for strictly medicinal purposes, hammer to the head or blow, gas or mask and injection were first used to knock someone out or put them to sleep. I don't necessarily need exact dates, even the right century would do to be honest. It's easy to find when they were first used, but hard to find specifically for surgery and what not.

Really hoping they're in that order by the way!

Thanks so much for any help!

  1. Hammer - never.  Not an anesthetic, only a weapon.

Alcohol was used prior to the modern era of anesthesia.

The first inhalation anesthetic was administered by Crawford Long on March 30, 1842.  The surgical procedure was the removal of a tumor from the neck of his patient, Mr. James M. Venable.

Don't know about the first injectable anesthetic.  It's not nearly as famous as Dr. Long's ether demonstration.
