  1. At the moment, Prince Charles is next in line to the throne.  He will take the crown after the current Queen dies, which could be next week or 10 years from now.  She's old, but holding up well.

  2. Never, unless QE2 abdicates or dies and the Prince of Wales will be the next ascendant.

  3. Badbroth is wrong. The current Queen has no right to choose her successor.

When she dies Charles will automatically be king, unless either his mother outlives him or he renounces his right to the throne. I don't believe for a moment that he will. He knows very well that if he did he would in effect be abolishing the principle of hereditary monarchy, which is, in a nutshell, that the throne goes to the next person in line, not the prettiest, cleverest or most popular.

  4. Technically what the other two geniuses said is correct but there is the factor that queen Elizabeth and prince charles can choose to pass the crown to william right away, if they both feel that he is ready, but likely, it would be a quich passing of the crown from grandma to pop to jr.

  5. When the Queen dies Charles will be crowned

  6. When the queen dies or abdicates the throne, Prince Charles would be king...

  7. technically Charles is next in line for the throne, however, he's almost 70, and the Queen ain't dying anytime soon, so his son William is more likely to take the throne. there's no way to predict wheen or who, it's a wait and see game.

  8. The role of a British monarch is for life, meaning unless The Queen choose to abdicate in favor of The Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, or pass away, she will be wearing her crown for possibly another decade to come. Her own father, King George VI never abdicated even though he was terminally ill from cancer, and Queen herself took an oath on her coronation day that she will serve her country ‘til of the last of her breath. Prince William of Wales is second in line, and he will remain in that position unless Prince Charles chooses to abdicate or passes away, and when he does inherit the crown, it will be known as the Crown of the United Kingdom, not just England only.

Although the Queen is still the current British monarch, she had passed much of her royal responsibilities and duties onto the shoulders of her eldest son, The Prince Charles, heir to the throne. He also carries out a full schedule of royal duties and, increasingly, is taking on more duties from his elderly parents as official representative of the Queen and deputy for his father.

Note: The line of succession to the British Throne is an ordered list of the people in line to succeed to the throne of the United Kingdom. The succession is regulated by the Act of Settlement 1701, which limits it to the heirs of the Electress Sophia of Hanover, as determined by male-preference primogeniture, religion, and legitimate birth. A person is always immediately followed in the succession by his or her own legitimate descendants (his or her "line"). Birth order and gender matter: older sons (and their lines) come before younger sons (and theirs); a person's sons (and their lines), irrespective of age, all come before his or her daughters (and their lines). Therefore, the Queen cannot and does not have the power to choose who she wants to succeed her.
