I live in central Alabama, where we are have approx. 8,000 evacuees. Anyway, I have to commute to school and I am trying to figure out when everybody will be on the roads returning so that I can come up with an alternate route to school.

  1. All schools are closed till at least Monday, September 8th.  Go on-line and Mapquest.com some alternate routes to your destination.

Generally, most city leaders wanted evacuated areas to stay closed till at least Friday.  Why is understandable--but so are reasons why evacuees want to return home; we'll stop there, because we know THOSE answers.

City leaders have heard from their area residents and are reluctantly allowing evacuees to return to their homes. NOLA Mayor Nagin and Governor Jindal are stressing valid points that evacuees with medical problems should NOT rush home.

Home isn't very comfy right now: Power in most affected areas is out, likely for a week---maybe two.  Water / sewage utilities also aren't safe as well, due to what flooding Gustav caused---which compared to Katrina, really wasn't all that bad, but dangers there are.

I understand resonately what it's like to be put out your home from a hurricane.  My family had to drive up to my home in Michigan and stay three weeks; power in their homes were restored a week afterwards.

Four weeks w/out power and/or utilities makes for a very uncomfy day to day life.

Many evacuees worry about their homes and properties. Statewide, law enforcement patrols around evacuated areas has been most impressive. Any looters caught get their azzes shipped to Angola Prison--NO EXCEPTIONS.  Only TWO idiots statewide have tried to loot; they're facing uncomfy weeks in Angola's "crossbar hotel" as we speak.  So your neighborhoods are quite safe.

Overall, statewide preparations for Gustav not only saved lives---but I really do feel utility recovery time will be done far earlier than when Katrina struck.  Personally, I think returning home too early will slow down / hinder utility restoration efforts.  But then again: it's your call.....just know what you're facing and IF you really want to face it.

  2. I had seen on the news that it may be safe to return on Wednesday

  3. some can return late tuesday.  I live where the eye hit and we can't go back until late wend.

  4. Weds or Thurs.

  5. It has been advised that the evacuees do not go home until Friday.  I just saw this on CNN.

  6. Go to your parish web site there should be a link that says when you can go home. It worked for lafourche, I can't go home yet. There should be a better more centralize system in place

  7. It is to school you are worrying about.........Do you understand the Gustav sufferers in your area and in other part of US .....NOW?  They will be longing to go back home to their homeland, no matter what....if possible.

Now !!! must look up to your short term President......walking down there to see for himself what he can do for his people......but must have immediate action.   Why OBAMA is not taking this incident into account for his buying of HEART of the Nation.???
