Question:

When will I be back to normal?

Hey, I just found out today after X-rays that I stress fractured by fibula in quite a few places. As of now, I'm in crutches and a boot for 2 months. When I finally get better (maybe 3 months) how long do YOU think it'll take me to be back to my normal running (18min 5k as a freshman this year)?

Thanks.

  1. the rule of thumb is it takes two weeks of training for every one week off.  However, I have had a lay off of 4 months, afterwards I was up and running(starting with one mile a day for the first 3 weeks) my normal mileage of 70 miles/week within 3 months.  I ran a 15:30 5k after the lay off. Dont lose heart during the rest period you will come back stronger.

  2. So you do not risk re-injury, you should start out easy.   Once it feels comfortable and painless get back into the swing of things.  Now your talking about a fracture and to be honest with you patience is your best bet.  If you rush into getting back into shape you will risk delaying the healing process and take even longer to get back into shape.  So let it heal properly, your a freshman, you have lots of time to run and race in the future..  Take Care and Happy running
