Question:

When will I get used to my retainer?

I just got my braces off today, and now my removable retainer is annoying me. The thing that's bothering me the most is the way I talk. I can't pronounce my "s" right. I have to wear the retainer 24/7 for one year, then I can just wear it at night after that. During that time period of one year, however, will I always talk like this?

  1. I have retainers too, for quite some time, and it took me about 2 weeks to get used to saying my S's. They sounded so slurred. You just have to make sure you talk all the time. Practice it, your tongue will eventually get used to the retainers in your mouth and you'll be able to pronounce words. Maybe not as clearly as without them, but better than what you sound like now.

    Good luck. :)

  2. When i got my braces i had to wear a retainer, but i only had to wear it 24/7 for the 2 weeks. Now i have to wear them every time i go to bed. I'm sure will get used to it, as long as you don't keep taking it out and playing with it. Just make sure you wear it because if you don't, you teeth will go crooked and you will need braces AGAIN! This happened to alot of my friends.
