When will I notice a difference in my cat after putting her on antibiotics for a UTI?

I just took the cat on Saturday and got a 14 day supply of antibiotics but the cat is still peeing around the house. I am on day 4 of the antibiotics. The vet said early dx was the cat has blood in her urine and a bacteria found in "stressed out" cats.

  1. I would expect to be seeing some improvement by day 4.  I had a cat with urinary stones and when antibiotics did not work after a few days, I called the vet.  He was x-rayed and we found the stones, which had to be surgically removed.  So if you see no improvement at all by Day 4, it's time to call.  It's also possible a different antibiotic is needed and the one you have isn't working for the type of infection your cat has.

  2. Put lemon juice in the cats water...

this changes the PH in the cat to more acid.

Also there are pills at the health food store that are consentrated cranberry juice.  VERY good for the urinary tract.

I get the kind that is small so it will go down easy O size.

    good luck

  3. Sometimes antibiotics don't work with a UTI, She might need a course of steroids too.

It is right that stress cause's UTI's.....You need to think about what might have upset her. It can be something really small.

Also, If you use dry food you need to either use a urinary type or take her off dry food all together

  4. Have you removed the "stresser"?  Otherwise it's just going to keep happening.  Sometimes it'll take a week or more to see any results.  The vet may have to use a stronger antibiotic if it doesn't clear up.

Also, once a cat starts to mark an area with urine, it will continue to go back there.  You need to use cat NO! on the area after cleaning it thoroughly.  Also, make sure you are cleaning your litterbox out daily and not using scented additives.  You should have 3-4 inches of litter in it, replacing it as you take out the waste.  Also make sure the box is no where near where your cat eats.  If you have more than one cat, ideally, you should have a box per cat.

I hope the best for your buddy and that he gets well quickly!

  5. Should have seen improvement by now.  Cats with UTI pee in unusual places so you may have to do a thorough cleaning and I would suggest "OdorBan".

  6. UTI's need to be hit from more than one angle, in many cases.  First, the right antibiotic.  Then you need to make sure that if there is a stress-related issue, to find the source of the stress and do what you can to remove it.  Also be sure to thoroughly remove the odor from the spots where she had gone - this takes one of those enzymatic cleaners like Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution, available at the pet store.

What antibiotic is she on?  Sometimes it can take more than one course of antibiotics or a very strong one (like Baytril) to clear up a UTI.
