And, I'm not talking about the hoax E-mail that has been going around since 2003... but I know mars passes closest the earth in August... when will that happen?

  1. Mars was at its closest to Earth on 18th December last year,  at a distance of 88 million km. At the moment, it is 354 million km from earth and still moving away.

  2. Mars and earth are currently at points in their orbits that place them nearly opposite the sun.  They are almost as far away from each other as they can get, and that is certainly not going to change before you flip the monthly calenders a few times.

  3. >>I know mars passes closest the earth in August<<

No it doesn't. Mars made a close approach a few months ago. It was very prominent in the sky then. It is now moving further away from us and won't be back for another close approach until late next year.
