When will PetSmart continue to sell birds here in Roanoke, VA? Or anywhere for that matter?

I've called them NUMEROUS times, yet nobody knows. I went there last on June 23 and they said that they would be selling them by the end of June. So I come back to the store, but they are STILL not selling them! grrr! It's been nearly a month, & now they're saying they won't be selling them until th end of July! Does anyone know when the bird sales will be continued! What's wrong here??

They were pressured by Avian Welfare Coalition to stop selling pet birds since there are so many good abandoned pet birds out there that need good homes, and producing thousands of fresh birds each other worsens their situation and their future generations'.

Besides, the main concern for AWC was that most large pet stores buy birds from breeders that raise their birds under improper conditions without adequate attention ("parrot mills") and just for the sake of money.

After some researching myself, I couldn't disagree with AWC. So don't buy, don't breed, adopt a pet bird in need! Visit http://www.avianwelfare.org to find the nearest parrot shelter and to learn about Avian Welfare Coalition.

Some of the pet stores in the southern states was having an issue with the avian virus. The Pet Smart stores pulled all the birds as a precaution and put them all in isolation. You see after the last hurricane they had to change breeders. They had been purchasing from a place in Florida but lost it in the hurricane.

Now, with the new breeder they were having this concern.

I was told by the manager that they have a new breeder but they have to inoculate the hatchlings and then wait to ensure they are very healthy. I was also told that they may not sell the larger parrots any longer due to the slow turnover.

When you go to the store ask to speak with the Specialty dept. manager.  This manager can make a few phone calls and get back to you.
