Probably never. They were very inefficient wood burners.

there are some available out there, check the architectural salvage yards if you are looking and not just idly wondering,,, I saw one in good condition near Raleigh, NC about a month ago.

There is a type of stove that closely resembles an old pot belly called a Franklin wood burner, I have seen several of these in the past year in the Mid Atlantic region of the US, always in the old style hardware stores.

As far as the comment about these types of stoves being inefficient,,, hog wash is all I can say.  A gas fireplace is more inefficient.

not for a while at least, because we are to "civilized"  to chop and burn wood.

I think at least that that could be good for the economy to start living more like the olden days.
