  1. They exist now! I have 2 cars that run on natural gas (methane), and Honda also makes one called the Civic GX that can make it from the California coast to Wyoming since there are enough filling stations along the way through Nevada and Utah. My own cars don't quite get the same mileage, so they can't make it between some of the stations, but they can go from Rock Springs, Wyoming to Las Vegas, Nevada anyway. It all depends upon the mileage you get and if there are filling stations along the way, same as for any type of car. Mine are both Fords, by the way; a Crown Vic and  F-150 pickup truck. I save gobs of money with fill-ups (87 cents per gallon) and it's also much cleaner for the environment. Check out my source below and see if one would work for you.

  2. at least a decade ago

  3. It already exists but it won't be mass produced. There are hydrogen, water, bio-diesel and electric powered.

  4. was 35 years ago,dad worked for chevy, they had it but were bought out and shut up.

  5. Well, there's diesel and natural gas.   My grandfather ran his truck off both gas and propane- he could drive from Mass. to Oregon only stopping once for fuel.   100 years ago most vehicles were electric, then came steam powered vehicles that ran on coal or wood.   There are many choices other than gasoline.

  6. when we can produce vast amounts of electricity without the use of fossil fuels.

the technology and infrastructure is already here.

  7. 3-4 years time

  8. Yes but it will not be electric or hydrogen powered.

The gasoline engine that we now use is  called in scientific circles as an "Otto" cycle and has an efficiency of 20 to 25 %, These engines are designed and engineered for gasoline.

They do not run efficiently on other fuels such as ethanol. If the engines were designed for ethanol they would not run on gasoline.

An engine will soon be available that will be 250% more efficient and will run on any type of fuel. This will bridge the gap to alternative renewable fuels.
