  1. An annular eclipse of the sun will occur on January 26, 2009.  It will not be visible to most observers in the northern hemisphere.

The next total eclipse of the sun will occur on July 22, 2009.  Unfortunately, for observers in North America and Europe, the eclipse will occur dunring "the night time" and the sun will not be above the horizon, and therefore, the eclipse will not be visible to people in these locations.

The next penumbral lunar eclipse will be February 9, 2009.

The next partial  lunar eclipse will be December 31, 2009.

The next total lunar eclipse will be December 21, 2010.

If I knew your location, I could give you more details as to which are going to be visible to you.

  2. There are all kinds of eclipses - total solar, partial solar, annular solar, total lunar, penumbral lunar, partial lunar.

While lunar eclipses are visible to the entire side of the Earth facing the moon, solar eclipses are only visible along a narrow path on the Earth's surface.

    Solar:

There was a total solar eclipse on August 1, visible over parts of the far northern hemisphere.

The next solar eclipse is an annular eclipse on Jan 26, 2009 (visible in the South Pacific), then a total solar eclipse on July 22, 2009 (visible in central and northeastern India, Bhutan, China).

    Lunar:

The next lunar eclipse is a penumbral eclipse on Feb 9, 2009 and another on Aug 6, 2009.

The next total lunar eclipse is Dec 21, 2010.
