When will blu-ray overtake hd-dvd?

I think that blu-ray will probably take over the hd-dvd sometime in the next 20-30 years!

Blu-ray and HD DVD can co-exist indefinitely.They are not quantum leaps in technology.Consumers simply aren't ready for a new high definition DVD format if it isn't spelled out simply and delivered in a manner that isn't confusing or easily mistaken for existing formats.DVD would have to be replaced. HD DVD and Blu-ray are not being positioned as replacements to DVD,they are simply an option.

It already has. Blockbuster's decision to only support Blu-Ray has mashed the HD-DVD format.

In the UK there are at least 3 times the amount of blu ray discs as HD dvd's available in HMV or Virgin...or Amazon.

oh...i forgot about the p**n industry, i predict when Blu-Ray internal disk drives for PC get under 200 MSRP and become more widespread for more use than just burning hi-def movies, id say THREE years perhaps, by the turn of the decade is my prediction, if not then then never, if people truly want one of the two, theyre gonna go with Blu-Ray because it has FULL HD, whereas HD-DVD only has a number of features attributed to HD, i'd personally pick Blu-Ray and thats when i believe it'll become the winner of VHS vs Betamax Episode II

actually they will both co-exist until a better format that will blow them both away.. do you really think hd-dvd makers are willing to go bankrupt that easily... btw, i like blu-ray more also

As for p**n, it's a non-issue.  Unlike the VHS/Beta era, Sony hasn't forbidden companies from using Blu-Ray for p**n.  Besides which, who really still *buys* p**n?  You can get plenty of it for free on the internet - even download entire movies in HD from the distributors for less than what it'd cost on a DVD even.

The whole format war is just a bunch of propaganda at this point.  With all the free give-aways and pack-ins, and all the spin both camps are doing, it's impossible to really know which - if any - is winning.  Nor should it really matter.  Everyone should just ignore both formats until the war is over.  That'll show the companies and studios what stupidity it is to divide the market like this.

I think they will coexist for a while but I have sneaking suspicion that they are both going to fail and be replaced in a few years anyway. Remember Sony MD, SACD, DVD A, People can not make up their minds. I have been a home audio/video enthusiast for a very very long time I still have not jumped on either wagon. I'll let the people who have no patience and a desire to waste money decide the fate. There are already viable replacements for HDDVD and Blue ray. it's only a matter of time....Personally I think these companies should all just slow down for a while and let people enjoy what they have master the technologies and then release the cat's a%% of a format that will just blow everyone away.

hd-dvd players are cheaper (walmart had one for $99 black friday and you can normally find one for $199 with 10 free hd-dvds any given day at best buy, while blu-ray players hover around the $399 range) they have more exclusives (once disney goes dual, blu ray will only have sony pictures as an exclusive) and actually look better because their players read the correct codecs (blu-rays have better potential but you have to buy a very high end player to get the true picture and sound)

Microsoft is just trying to delay the inevitable. Everyone knows they're getting their assess handed to them by Sony and Blu-Ray, including MS. As long as this "battle" continues, MS rakes in the dough. Once its over you'll start seeing Blu Ray players made by MS. I think it'll be over once the contract with Paramount and MS ends, which I think is sometime in the next two yrs, or less.
