I know we have the technology...of course I'm sure its very early in its development...BUT...how far away do you think it'll be until a flying car is actually on the market for anyone to buy??

  1. in a few years

  2. For the masses? Probably never. Consider the number of people killed by autos, and the stupid things that people do with them. Now, what will happen when they can move in THREE DIMENSIONS?

Will robbers be cruising overhead? Landing in yards, and taking what they  want and fleeing from the cops over the city? Where can I buy an anti-aircraft gun to protect my property?

I don't want to think about this any longer.

  3. The flying car, or "areo car" and also called the "aero car" was in fact produced and available to the public back in the late 40's after the second world war.

A Mr. Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians pitcher was a spokeman and salesperson for the company.

Needless to say, they didn't go over to well and stopped production.

  4. Flying cars have been available for people to buy since the 1930's!  So far, no one has been able to build one that is commercially successful.  Do some research on Molt Taylor and his Aerocar...

No matter if you could buy one today, or next year... You'll still need a pilot's license to fly it.

  5. They have been around for quite some time.

They are not, and can never be, very good aircraft.

The idea of the general driving public taking to the

air is ridiculous. Even without the coming fuel crunch.

  6. Not ever.

First, the technology does not exist, because it is not practical.  The characteristics of a good automobile and those of a good airplane contradict each other.  A car that is light enough to fly is too light to be driven safely on the highway; and 50 other contradictions.

Moreover, the average person can't figure out how to tie their shoes, much less fly an aircraft.  I suggest you drive around some and see what people are doing at the wheel.  Believe me, you would not want to be up in the air surrounded by the typical drivers of today.

Also, we are running out of the natural resources such a vehicle would consume.  Imagine what the fuel consumption of a flying car would be at $5, $6, $7 per gallon.

And other reasons listed by other answerers.  Finally, it has been tried several times without success.  It will never happen.

  7. I would say not in the near future. Here is a really cool one though that is in the works from a group out of MIT

  8. A flying car for the masses won't happen until people can drive within the rules of the road. It won't happen until people start properly maintaining their cars. It won't happen until people can be trusted not to act like total maniacs behind the wheel.

So, likely never. The technology won't be the problem, the stupidity of the masses will prevent any serious sales.

  9. It probably won't happen in the forseeable future. By saying this I mean centuries. What's definate is that it won't happen in u, or my lifespan.

  10. Hopefully never.  If they start flying in cars, I'm giving up my job flying a jet.  I have enough trouble trying to find all of the aircraft up there now!  I can't imagine trying to look for traffic when there are thousands of cars flying around, or how they would be able to control or sequence them.  I just don't think it will ever be practical.

  11. Flying cars have been marketed at least three times in the 1940s and 50s. They just never gained any popularity.

  12. According to Popular Mechanics, around 1984.

  13. The problem isn't technology.  It is mentality.  Flying cars are safe, but not if put in the hands of the masses.

Pilot an airplane and see what it's like.
