  1. The birds must be adults, must be one male and one female, must like one another  then they must be hormonal to breed.

You need to search online for information about diet, size needed to house and breed them, read also about egg binding and hand feeding and problems to watch for in hens with egg's, male aggression and signs of trouble or sickness.

  3. I have parakeet pair. The date I became a member of Y! Answers (April 13, 2008) was the day I placed the nest box in their cage.

When I first put the nest box, they treated it as if it didn't exist. After a week has passed, nothing happened; so, I decided to transfer it to the highest and most frequently visited perch they had. I also placed one of their food container near the hole in the hope of attracting them. Another week has passed and nothing happened, but I did not lose hope. On the third day of the next week, as the male was eating, he became curious of the hole and peered in it for at least 6 seconds and lost interest. This went on for the rest of the week. At the last part of the month, the male starts entering the box and spends a few minutes chewing on the shredded paper I put inside. The noise he makes attracted the hen and she starts approaching it and after peering at what the male was doing, she then enters the box and explores it shortly. This lasted for a week until they both go inside the nest to explore it. So, it nearly took them 2 months to get interested in the box. When they do explore, be sure not to disturb them as they might get scared and lose their interest in the box.

In the mating, they started mating in July, about 1 month after they entered. Mine did not mate often, but they continued the act till August. I also entered a period of being desperate about breeding them and I learned that patience is very important. I just waited and waited.

Fortunately this August 30, my hen finally laid an egg and she laid her 3rd egg today. It feels rewarding after all the time I've waited for them to lay eggs.

I hope my experience helped you! Don't lose hope and have patience always. The time will come soon and you'll be very happy about it. :-)
