Hi,

I have an apple tree in my garden which I cut back earlier in the year. It is very healthy but I only have a few apples growing on it. Is this because I cut it back? if so, when would it have been best for me to cut it back because I think I'm going to have to do this on an annual basis as I don't want it getting to big. I am in the UK so the answer will need to be based on UK seasons. Thanks.

  1. they should be appearing by now,if not dont panic, they will soon, should be ready to be picked in september, thats the best time to pick apples.

  2. yes it is because you cut it back this year, best time to cut back is late autumn, did mine last year, this year tree is loaded with so many apples i will have to give loads away.

  3. You will prob start getting apples back next year september/october is the best time to cut them back. For mor advice go to the bbc website they have some good gardening tips

  4. If your cutting back quite hard then prune oct to jan this will give time for the sap to force itself through the bark and make a bloom and through that an apple. If pruning lightly than oct to march. If the sap has not broken through the bark when it should be flowering, than when it does break through the time has passed and it makes a leaf bud instead of flower bud.Do not prune every year but bi-annual is better
