Question:

When will my eggplant tree give me an eggplant?

I bought a little eggplant from a hardware/garden store back in May and planted it in my garden...it's got plenty of space to grow, and for about a month, it did nothing...didn't die, but didn't grow either....then the summer started here in Miami, FL, (lots of rain and lots of hot sun) and this thing just shot up! I have a bunch of flowers, but no eggplant yet. I'd say it about 2.5' tall now and getting pretty wide...any tips, or anyone know how long it takes for it to give me an eggplant?

  1. Since you say it has “a bunch of flowers” – you will have a bunch of eggplants. You should have eggplants growing from most of the sites that have flowers. If I were you, I would stake the plant, if it hasn’t been done already. As the eggplant fruit grows – they get pretty heavy and you don’t want the plant and its fruit to get to the point where it is so top heavy – it falls over or breaks.

Be patient, once the flowers fall off, the eggplant you are waiting for will begin to develop. Depending on the particular “type” of eggplant it is, will determine the size and color of the fruit at maturity.

  2. you have to wait until it gets to be 5 feet tall and then it will bloom
