The car I am hopefully buying on thursday is not yet taxed, and I have just purchased insurance online with elephant.co.uk this morning. I have requested that my insurance starts from 00:01am on thursday- however I need my insurance certificate to tax the vehicle... when will the certificate hopefully arrive? and is there any other way I can tax the vehicle without the certificate?

thanks

  1. 30to  60 days

  2. You won't be able to tax the vehicle on-line as your insurance details are unlikely to have been loaded onto the MID (Motor Insurance Database) Chris was referring to above.

Once the insurance has been set up and running for a while, you will be able to arrange subsequent tax renewals on-line.  But any recent changes to your insurance (including a new vehicle, new policy or other changes) could affect your ability to renew tax on-line as all these MID changes typically take several working days to upload onto the centralised system.  You will know when online renewal of your tax is available becuase the appropriate information will be included with your tax renewal from DVLA.

Insurers are well aware of the MID and the penalties involved in failing to meet their obligations under this legislation so I would expect your documents to arrive in a prompt fashion.

  3. The insurance documents are usuall with you fairly quickly.  Tomorrow or the next day, I should think.  You can get your road tax online as well.  I think they are all linked up.
