When will my parakeets be able to mate?

I have a blue, female parakeet and a male, green one. They are both about 2-3 months old. When will my female one be able to reproduce? And how can I tell? Do I need to provide anything for my female? (a nest?)

  1. Firstly, your pair will need to be at least 1 - 1 1/2 years in age.  You will want to have them already on a well balanced diet of fresh veggies, fruits, seeds and pellets with added calcium.  NO SPINACH while prepairing for breeding.

Get all your equipment before breeding the pair, supplies for hand feeding, brooder etc.

Extra cages, extra money saved incase you need an emergency vet visit at 3am!

Theres a lot more, but you can find a lot of info at

Good luck with the breeding (a year from now!)

  3. Yours is still too young. It would be about 2 years when they can mate. A female is ready to mate when here cere is rough brown and the male has a blue cere.

  4. ok you have a long time to RESEARCH! birds should not breed until they are 1 year old (18 months is better)!, they need to be in tip top shape, Fed high quality pellets, seeds, and fresh veggies, they need a cuttle bone, the correct size cage , and the correct size nest box with the correct size entry hole

Do NOT breed if you do not do the research!, this is not simple, There is more heart ache than anything else!, you will have to learn how to hand feed- This is dangerous if you do not know how to properly do it!, You can kill the babies if not done right, if the food is too hot it'll cause crop burn - you only need to hand feed IF the parents do not feed them! if you end up having to pull the babies you'll need a brooder I made my own (you can Google home made brooders)

You have to have a place for the babies, if your not planning on keeping them have a home for them before they are born,

it is very very very important you do A LOT of research on breeding before you even attempt it, Not just reading books and on line Find a local breeder who will show you how to do things.

  5. Parakeets should not be allowed to breed before they are 12 months old, but 18 months is even better.

Keets do reach sexual maturity at around 6-8 months old though, so the ability for them to breed from around that age is there, however hens that breed too early have a shorter life span in general, and also at a high risk of egg binding (egg becoming stuck in the body) which is most often fatal if not treated by a vet within 24 hours.

Young hens are also mentally immature. They can produce the eggs, sit on them and hatch them, but just not know how to raise and feed her babies. Often chicks of young hens are thrown from the nest or left to starve to death.

Birds *usually* won't breed without the right conditions such as daylight hours and a suitable nesting site (nest box) so it is the owners responsibility to not provide these until the birds are at a suitable age.

Some birds are determined to breed even with all the *wrong* conditions, but thats a bridge you only need to cross if you come to it. It's not common.

  6. yeah look at breeding sites but they can start after there first molt

  7. You should join a forum called talkbudgies.com.

They have a great amount of info on budgies.

Please do not try breeding them until you have researched everything.  It is ALOT of hard work taking care of the babies if the parents neglect them.

But to answer your question, not until they are at least a year old and you will need to provide quite a few things.  Go join the forum and more experienced Budgie owners can help you out.

Good luck, and be careful.  These are little lives you're playing with here.
