Our mama cat had kittens 15 days ago. She lets us handle them - we pet them and pick them up in front of her. As long as we hold them in the closet (where she gave birth, her queening box is, and where they "live" for now), she's fine. We can even put them on the floor and let them crawl around. But if we take them out of the closet, she comes and takes them back to the queening box. (Where she's chosen to keep them - a huge Rubbermaid container with blankets in it.) How long will it be until she allows us to take them out of the closet without worry? How will we know it's ok with her?
She does leave the closet to walk around the house and eat the other cat food we have downstairs. (We have been feeding her kitten food and canned food - but have the regular cat food downstairs still for our other cat.) She has also been laying outside the queening box quite a bit over the last 2-3 days, leaving the kittens in the box. She doesn''t mind if we sit on the closet floor with the kittens - and she'll even leave for her "jaunt" while we're in there playing with them. All the kittens have eyes open, some act like they can see, some act like they can hear a little, and most head to the corner of the box closest to us when we go in the closet - like they want to be picked up. One falls asleep in my hand quite often...and they seek out our hands to pet them when we're around them.
