  1. Not for a very long time.....VHS only became a dead format a few years ago.

  2. They are already making DVDs in high definition and Blu-ray.

  3. when blu ray dvd's become the same price as dvd

  4. if you look at vhs, its been about 10 years ish for its decline since the intro of dvd, I would guess 10 years for high def to take over dvd, who knows what technology will come up with next. They will never disappear completly, only reduce in availability. I wouldnt be worrying about it.

  5. your standard DVD's will not go out of date, standard DVD players will probably disappear in a few years once the price of Blu-Ray players goes down.

They beautiful thing about Blu-Ray players (and HD-DVD players for that matter, even though that format is now dead) is that they can still play all regular DVD's. Once the price of a  Blu-Ray player is around $100 there will not be a need for a standard DVD player anymore since the Blu-Ray player does everything a DVD player does plus more. It even makes the picture quality of your standard-def DVD's look much better.

You can't really compair it to VHS vs. DVD because when DVD players came out they couldn't play your VHS collection obviously. Because Blu-Ray can play DVD's it wont take nearly as long before Blu-Ray becomes the standard
