  1. The 1911 census will be available for public viewing in 2012.

It will be available at record offices etc, but I dont think it will be online.

I have read that it has not been kept very well and a lot of it could be unreadable due to damp.

    Quote from the website

Recently (April 2007), National Archives announced that ScotlandOnline will be their partner in the project to put the 1911 census for England and Wales online. From 2009 there will be a phased release of the information starting with the major conurbations; this will include images and transcription data.

A caveat on this is that "personally sensistive" information will not be available until 3 January 2012. According to the minutes of the FRC User Group in January 2007, this would include "details of infirmity or other health-related information, information about family relationships which would usually have been kept secret and information about very young children who were born in prison".

  2. After a hundred years in 2011

  3. I have no idea... My mum is in to that stuff. She's making her family tree. I can't wait until I'm on the census. Even though I am only 17 years old. :) Make me best answer pleaseeee I'm trying to beat my friend... Cause I'm really cool!! :)

  4. The first working day of January 2012, so it will be quite interesting to see if the internet crashes on that day and how full the National Archives and local county record offices get in those first few months.

When the 1901 census went online the amount of demand meant the site was down for days.  Hopefully, they'll have learnt their lesson by now.

Poorly paid Indian workers have already been outsourced to film and index the records in preparation for 2011, and there has been talk of certain records being released as early as 2009, albiet with certain information blanked out.  For those who have money to burn and a known 1911 street address, you can already pay a huge amount of cash to the National Archives for a search under the Freedom of Information Act.  Frankly, I can afford to wait.

What worries most is that no matter how much information is put online, genealogists always want more (!!).  No sooner has the 1911 census been released, people will be demanding the 1921 pages be made available as well - indeed - some people already are!  For as we all know, no sooner has one question been answered, another three usually appear in its place (!!!).  Unlike some people, I know where my ancestors were (or should be) in 1911, so am not that desperate to sign petitions or anything.  I'll still be in the scrum to download images that very first day they become available though!!

  5. 2009, on line with restrictions. (names and address only)

Restricted access now by way of a chargeable research service, and, as I understand it, a partial digital data base available in 2009 with the full census released in 2012

From the UK National Archives site :-

In response to great public demand The National Archives is developing an online 1911 Census service, covering most parts of the census, with an external partner; we are actively investigating the possibility of launching this digital service in 2009. Over two kilometres of census records, containing the details of 35 million UK ancestors, will be digitised. This will provide an online service, across most fields of the Census, enabling researchers anywhere in the world to search and download digital scans of images from the census. As with our current online census services it will be both address and name searchable. It is anticipated that it will be available from 2009. It will offer a much cheaper and speedier access to the census returns than the planned FOI service. The full 1911 census won't be released until 2012.

What is the service that you are providing now?

A basic research service to enable you to request information from specific addresses in the 1911 census

The 1911 Census does not have a surname index so we cannot conduct searches for names in the original documents - when it goes online this will be easy to do

We cannot provide personally sensitive information from the 1911 census

How do I make a request now?

    You will need to provide:

    1. House name or number / Building name / Vessel name

    2. County

    3. Civil Parish

Requests cannot be processed without this information.

The FOI Act requires information requests to be processed within 20 working days. These 20 working days begin once The National Archives has received payment.

All requests must be in writing and an online form is provided for your convenience. Go to our form to apply online

Will I have to pay for this information?

This will be a charged service in line with The National Archives paid search service - currently £45 per address search

  6. The 1911 United Kingdom (UK) census will be published 100 years later in 2011.

All new census data will now be available online, so you no longer need to look through paper records if you don't wish to do so.

If you are not talking about the UK, please state your country in your question.

  7. Wow.  It is amazing to me that the UK waits 100 years.  In the US ours are released after 72 years.  We have access up to 1930.  Our 1940 will be released in 2012.  That puts us 30 years ahead of you guys.

  8. in 2011 they wait 100 years to publish them for public viewing. look at the most recent one online they are very interesting

  9. It's normally 100 years from when it was taken, but I recently read that as of 2009, they will slowly begin to make records available. check in the genealogy magazines to find out more.

  10. Census' back then were taken every 10 years. There is a 1910, 1920 and 1930. I doubt you'll find an 11 anywhere.

After 2010 the 1940 census should be available on Ancestry.com.

  11. try some google search !

  12. 2011 all census' can be made public after 100 years!

  13. January 2nd 2012, it is released exactly 100 years after December 31st 1911. So the 1911 census, which is due for release on the first working day of January 2012. We have a bank holiday on January 1st, so that's why it's due out on the 2nd.

    Here is some additional information,

1911 UK Census - Will be opened January 2012

The most important innovation made in 1911 was the use of the census to obtain more detailed information bearing on the fertility of marriage. The 1911 Census was also the first in which machines were used for purposes of tabulation in Great Britain. A significant consequence of the introduction of machinery was that it enabled the results of the census to be presented in greater detail than could ever have been attempted before.
