Question:

When will the U.S. become a nation of two languages?

I want this nation to have more than one official language. Canada, Belgium and India for example have more than one official language. The time is now to have Spanish as our second official language. I speak 4 languages and it is a door opener to understanding other people and cultures. Please support the drive for making Spanish our co-official language. It starts now by writing and e-mailing your Representative and Senator.

  1. Most Americans can hardly grasp proper English let alone multiple languages.  I think it would be better to be a master of English than a person who knows several languages, but none proficiently.  Why do you give precedent to Spanish?  Why not Mandarin or French?  You speak of a "door opener to understanding other people and culture," but you only mention Spanish.  I find that being surrounded by Spanish speaking only people here in L.A. to be a major nuisance.  Language is important to culture and English is the official language of the United States.

You emailed me asking why I'm anti -Latino and claim that it must be do to a bad experience with a Latina or something.  That is an argument that does not even justify and response, but I'll provide one anyway.  I have a lot of Latino friends and immigrant friends from other countries that got here legally.  Illegal immigrants from any country are criminals by the simple fact that they are here illegally and this prevents or at least delays more qualified, skilled, and trustworthy immigrants to get into this country and make positive contributions.  The ones that cross over illegally are by and large criminals who end up in prison or social programs they didn't earn.  You might want to concentrate your energies on encouraging them to learn English.  One more thing, I have never had any bad experiences with any Latina.  You may speak four languages, but you your inability to think rationally is apparent in your illogical ideas, weak arguments to support them, and sophomoric attempts at an insult to someone who disagrees with you.  Comprende?  Capish?

  2. The United States does no have an official language--and does not need one.  Immigrants have been coming here ever since the late 1800s not knowing the language. And in every period, thee have been whining bigots making noises about whatever group and whatever language it was.

And every single time the immigrants learn English in time--ON THEIR OWN--and assimilate.

We certainly don't need more neoconservative laws telling people how to behave or what language they can speak.  If you prefer that, go ahead an move to Canada,Belgium, or India.

  3. Even if I were to learn Spanish, who would I speak it to? Nobody in my family knows the language and none of my friends speak it either. I also don't watch Spanish language programming or listen to the music. Because of the way I look, nobody is going to walk up to me and ask if I speak the language.

  4. Que?

  5. Many Americans like things the way they are, and Spanish speaking incomers are pissing me off! ( I SPEAK  4 languages).

  6. Does that mean I also have to drive as if I'm the only one one the road? Stair at people as they walk by? Play my music at top volume?

  7. Let me ask you this, What Nationallity are you.

Americas language is, was, and always should be American English.

  8. That would make things too confusing.  In the North, very few people speak Spanish.  French would probably make more sense in the North since we border French Canada.  But many people in the South speak Spanish.  Now we're getting into being a nation of three languages.  English is all we need officially.  Anything else is overly complicated.

  9. Hopefully never.  I do not support two official languages in the USA.

  10. There is such a thing as the American culture. Part of that culture is the English language. There is absolutely no reason to change or add to the one language. What could we possibly gain?

  11. I hope never.

  12. No. Comprende?

  13. I hope never.  Why do we need the confusion of several languages.  If you want to be a US citizen learn English and participate.

How about Gaelic.  We have a lot of Irish.  Or something like Swahili for the People from Africa.  etc. etc.

I sure see no compelling reason for it to be Spanish.

    The Mafia probably want Italian
