  1. There are two positions from which one can view this.

One is a position of, shall we say, inexperience.  In this position, one is pretty much unaware of what's going on.  This is a big, big world.  Enormous, compared to our little individual selves and our little individual minds.  Our minds are only capable of taking in one little bit of information at a time.  Yet we tend to think that what is in our mind and our perception is the whole world.  We confuse words with the things they represent.  So we think the word "world" and we get an image in our minds and we think that's the world.  But what is that image, compared to the reality of the world through the vastness of time?  What is our knowledge of the world, compared to that reality?  It's infinitesimally tiny.

So from this position of knowing so little, of seeing so little, of all the complex reality of history and the present out of which the conflicts that exist in the world have been created, it is easy to say, well, why can't we get along?  But it has no power to it.  In essence, it is born of ignorance of the self and of the world.  It doesn't know itself.  It doesn't know human beings and their incredible story.  It is the position of the child who has fallen from the state of grace, the innocence of childhood, into the knowledge of the reality of evil as it is today, and who has been fallen into that evil, to become part of the problem and thus feels helpless to do anything about it.  To it, nature says, go forth and experience and learn.  Go and learn why world peace is so hard.

The other position is that of the person who has gone forth and experienced, and struggled, and learned.  The person who knows himself, and has freed himself from the bondage of the state the world is in.  Who is no longer part of the problem, but part of the solution.  Who sees the reasons why world peace is so hard, but knows how easy it truly is for people to live in peace with each other once they let go of the past and forgive.  Because he does in fact live that way.

  4. To quote my ecology professor, "I don't know, because I'm not God!"

  5. Sadly, as long as man-kind is self serving, as long as people are convinced that theirs is the one way, the only way and the true way of living, and attempt to force others to live and believe as they do- as long as their is greed, hate, prejudice and discrimination, the world will never "Live as one" as Mr. Lennon "Imagined."

World peace is a beautiful dream that many of us hope for, wish for, but few of us ever work toward.

In this dream we see a world ruled by love and not hate, generosity and not greed, kindness and not condemnation.

In my life I have come to the conclusion that I cannot change the entire world. Yet I have also realized my own individual power to change my little part of the world.

Every day I choose to either contribute to the promotion of peace, or to the conditions which make the world a place of greed, hate and division.

While I have not achieved "perfect peace" in my life, I have realized my own responsibility in achieving this state, through my thoughts, speech and actions.

In order to achieve world peace, we must all learn to do so.

Consider the many things which separate men from one another, and consider the overall importance of those things, in your own life.

By laying down our own grudges, and setting aside moralistic judgments and condemnation of others, we each contribute to the state of "peace" within our own lives, and therefore within the world as a whole.

  6. Because as long as there is money, land and power; there are reasons to fight.

Have you not heard the song "Imagine" by John Lennon.  He makes a very similar point and proceeds to answer it.  He is asking us to imagine a world in which there was nothing to fight over, (Countries, religion, etc..).

This is a world (we live in) in which we have these things to fight over, and until we can learn to let those things go, there will continue to be war, terrorism and racism.

Ignorance is bliss.  If you can ignore race then you can accept anyone.  If you can ignore heaven and h**l then you can live without fear of going to either.  Again, if you can just ignore the need to know how we came to be, or why we are here (what is our purpose), then you can live for today, and not have to worry about the future.

    Hope I helped.

  7. Conflict seems to be innate in human nature, from the playground to the Dis-United Nations.

  8. Far too many different perceptions and beliefs of  race, religion, ideologies, governance, etc and the reluctance to forget and forgive.

The pride and arrogance of one nation's history and current power status make all the more difficult to work towards peace, racial and religious harmony. The fate and destiny of nations are held in the hands of a small minority of leaders and ministers. It is essential that the majority of the population are also literate and non-aggressive to support the leadership in order to ensure peace. And distrust of certain nations will encourage the relentless build-up of military hardware for self-defence and survival--because history says so.

It seems Mankind can never come to the negotiating table, to return territories they have grabbed or to reduce their nuclear weapons--to make reasonable comprises for the sake of global peace. Aggression, threats and wars seem to be the more attractive option, the order of the day.
