I am just curious about when the Chevrolet Volt and The new Camaro will finally be brought to the market. The Volt is a plug in hybrid that will get amazing MPG and as far as I know nobody else is really working on this technology. Do you think that if they do manage to make it a success it will force other auto makers to follow suit? I wish they could make me a plug in hybrid Tahoe with third row seating that gets 30 miles on a charge and then goes hybrid after that, I would use less gas than most economy cars. What do you all think about this technology, and what do you think are ways to improve upon it? I am of the mindset that the easiest way to get awesome gas mileage is to make a good bio-diesel engine that is also a plug in hybrid, diesel engines are 30% more efficient and combined with the best hybrid technology could yield amazing results. We could save the planet and lower gas prices and all drive our big suv's while posting about 30 mpg, your thoughts please

Toyota is working on a plug-in version of the Prius, as well.

And Ford is hoping to sell plug-in hybrids in 5-10 years

They just made a hybrid version of the Tahoe, but it only gets 25% better mileage than the regular Tahoe.

SUVs are inerently inefficient due to their size, so there's not likely to be a lot of work on making a plug-in version.  It will probably happen eventually, but auto makers will focus on smaller, more efficient cars first.

The easiest way to get great gas mileage is to get rid of the gas altogether and run the car on electric power.  We're going to see some excellent electric vehicles available starting around 2009.

A biodiesel-electric car would be very environmentally friendly as well.  The German auto companies (BMW, Volkswagon, etc.) are workinng on diesel-electric hybrids right now.

So that may soon be an option.  The problem with biodiesel is that we don't want to use too much agricultural land for transportation fuel, so we can't rely on it too heavily.

  2. I hope not too much early, or better never. They are very detrimental. Some "experts" like it simple, and forget the judgment of a vehicle should start from its fabrication. What help is it if they get an amazing MPG if their production costs so much more of fuel and other? And if their life is so much shorter?

  3. all are working on alternative fueled cars.

It's pointless to make a big vehicle plug in / hybrid. weight is the enemy. for there to be any efficiency small and light is the way to go.  weight and acceleration requires energy. why do we need big suv's.  And if you did make an escalade / tahoo a hybrid it would have the performance of putting a 1.8L engine in it, it wouldn't have the balls to get out of its own way.

  4. Well first of all the Volt is NOT a hybrid. A hybrid uses both a gas engine and a small electric motor too move the car. The Volt ONLY uses electric drive. Theoretically you could rip out the gas generator and it would still go. All the way up to 120 MPH.

And the person who said big electric vehicles don't make sense is an idiot. Big vehicles use the most gas. They need this technology more than anything. Americans are not going to stop buying full size SUVs anytime soon.

I'd also like to point out that he's an idiot for claiming it "wouldn't have enough balls to get out of it's own way". Electric vehicles are MORE POWERFUL than gas cars. Bob Lutz explained the Volt could easily manage a 5-6 second 0-60. That's impressive for ANY class of vehicle. And it's flat out amazing compared to the 13 seconds it takes the Prius.

  5. These cars have been manufactured for about ten years.

Their debut to the public is expected in 3-5 years.

    Keep waiting!

2010 is just around the corner...
