A super tanker is travelling at 15miles/hour in a straight line. Assume that the tanker is heading directly at an iceberg that is drifting at 5miles/hour in the same direction that the tanker is going. If the two are 1.16667miles apart, how long will it take the two to meet?

  1. 20 miles/h    d/rate=time

    5/3/20=1/12 hour  5 minutes

  2. The tanker is closing the distance between itself and the iceberg at a rate of 10 mph (15-5).

At that rate the 1.6667 mile gap will disappear in 0.16667 hours (1.6667/10).

    0.16667 hours = 0 hours, 10 minutes, 0.012 seconds.
