I planted some flower seeds and usually after two days on sunshine in Britain we get a thunder storm and rain. I was wondering when and not if we will get some rain?

  1. You are right to say that in Northern Europe (I am Norwegian) a heat wave often ends with thunderstorm and rain. But we don't have a heat wave now; it's too early in the season and the sea water is still too cool to really create a heat wave and the convective low resulting from it.

What happens now is that - as it does about three times per year, the jetstreams that are high atmosphere east going winds, are weakening to nearly nothing. Those are responsible for the frequent frontal lows we experience in our latitudes. When that happens, a stable high pressure tend to form over the British Islands and the North Sea. It means, little wind, clear sky and maybe a possibility for fog, especially in coastal regions.

The interesting thing is that, the longer such a high pressure last, the longer it is likely to stay.

But don't worry, rain will come back with time. Here in southern Norway, we are happy it doesn't rain for the moment because we have still a lot of snow in the mountains it is smelting quickly. If rain comes on the top of that, we risk dangerous flood in our rivers.
