i always used to say i would never get one until they were completely voice commanded and i could browse the internet for stuff anywhere in the house or in the car just by asking for information out loud, or doing any a number of tasks like maybe paying a bill while i was making dinner or formulating a proposal while taking a shower. of course, with school and work, i ended up having to buy one. but now, sitting here in front of it, i remembered why i felt like that...so i wouldn't end up sitting in front of one.

  1. "Personal" is meant only to imply that it is designed to be operated by a single person (as opposed to the mainframes of old, which had multiple users sitting at dumb terminals).

If anything, the requirement to talk to a computer would guarantee that you couldn't use it in a private manner, at least out in public.

  2. Windows 98 could be operated by voice, with software that came with most creative labs sound cards.  The computer you want, is already here.  it's been here.

Back then, it was simply a matter of essentially setting up voice triggered macros.  A macro is a series of commands that are recorded.  You initiate the macro, and it does all the things it was programmed to do.

Voice operation software now is far more sophisticated.  A computer is simply a very powerful tool, as long as you know what you want to do with it.

All it takes is a few google searches.

  3. Well with Dragon Naturally Speaking software you can "talk" to your computer through a microphone and it will do tasks such as write a document, run simple programs, and open things on your desktop. You can also use a smartphone (such as a Blackjack 2 or Blackberry) and surf the web while driving around in your car if your in a wifi hotspot. So I guess technically that era of technology has come, but its not nearly refined enough to be as smooth as you'd want it to.
