Question:

When wiring an electric motor will it change directions when switching the wires around?

I'm trying to wire togeather an old sewing machine. It ran backwards after I wired it so I switched the wires opposite of what they were but the motor still runs backwards. I just said forget about running the current through the foot control right now until I can figure out how to make the motor spin the right way. Any thoughts?

  1. swapping  the black and white wires will not change the direction,,,you have to swap the primary wires leading in to the motor, ,,  coil and armature  wires ,,,  these wires are usually brown,,, in other  words ,,swap black wire to opposite brown wire  and white wire to brown wire where the black was,,,, also  it was said you have to give it a push in the right direction,,,try that first,,,then  see bout swapping   wires,,,,,,good  luck,,,,

  2. It can be done by reversing the armature, the part that spins inside the windings. If you don't understand you should take it to a fix-it shop. If it's an old machine Irv may be on the right track. I have an old Singer 32 volt that needs a nudge to get it to reverse.  RScott

  3. Add another gear off of the motor so it will make it spin in the opposite direction? a simple thought but a lot harder to do. Or get another motor entirely because it may be wired to run "backwards" either way you have the power running through it.

    hope that helps

  4. Some of those old machines had to be started in the

proper direction with a push on the handwheel as

    the power was applied.
