Question:

When writing a quote...?

When you're writing a quote, do end it with "Said Jane" or "Jane said?" For example:

Is it:

"I'll be right out," Jane said. OR:

"I'll be right out," said Jane.

Usually I use the first method, but I was just reading a book that usually put the verb and then the name of the person who said quote - so I was just wondering.

Thanks guys! :)

  1. I use the first way when I want to add something about what is happening.

"I'll be right out," Jane said as she grabbed her coat.

I use the second way when I want to cut it off.

Not that they can't be used either way. That's just the way I use them.

  2. "Actually, while either one is correct, standard usage would dictate your second example, said Bruce.

In the newspaper business however, we use your first example, although it would be the parties last name, rather than their first name in the article.

  3. it is said Jane
