  1. Yes, that is the point.  You are caught between two hard things!

    It's just a fancier way of saying it.

Being caught between a rock and a hard place means that you are feeling pressure from two different sources, one that you may have brought on yourself or have seen coming (the rock), and the other caused by circumstances that you may or may not have been able to control (the hard place).  Neither one of these situations, by themselves would be enough to cause you an issue, but because they have presented themselves at the same time, you have been pinned to a single point by them both, and you have to decide which one, while difficult, will ultimately give (the rock) and which one will be a waste of your time to try and work against (the hard place).

  3. the rock is hard it means you dont have one good choice to pick from.
