When you're done eating at a restaurant, and you pay with a credit/debit card, how do you usually tip?

Do you leave a tip in cash? Or do you write the tip amount on to your bill?

Is it better to do one over the other?

  1. I'm a server, and really, I don't care as long as you tip me.

However, if you leave me cash, it means I pay less taxes. My company claims my credit card tips automatically, and I'm responsible for my cash tips. So, if I claim less than I actually make, I pay less taxes, which results in more money for me.

Not too honest, but I think the majority of servers would agree.

  2. ill just throw some bills and the table and do the boogie woogie woo on outta there

  3. if i have cash for a tip i leave it that way, otherwise i put it on my card.  either way most places make them claim tips on taxes, and i am sure the employee # is on the receipt so i don't think it really matters.

  4. ducking to miss the wrath of my friend shelly, but i dont tip

  5. i always just write the tip on my bill.  i dont think one is better than the other .  the waitstaff just cares that you actually tip!

  6. leave cash

  7. from my experience of working in resturants with some of the card machienes (apologise about the spelling but its late!) they have an option to add a tip or gratuitry. If not leave cash, But its wise to leave cash anyway as some banks take a cut from the tips to sort them out seperatly, and sumtimes if placed on card the staff never sees the money as management takes it! hope this helps.

  8. I usually pay cash for the tip. I make sure I have at least 5 dollars on me in cash to use.  It just seems easier.

  9. I use to work in restaurants. I always try to tip in cash and when I was serving & bartending I preferred my tips in cash. It gets confusing, but in some places the establishment would claim your credit card tips for you and at the end of the night all you would claim is your cash tips. That's fine except for the fact that you in most cases tip other people out. So it appears to Uncle Sam that you are only claiming 10% and sometimes less on some nights.

Some places too, the tipped staff don't get their credit card tips that night. I never worked anywhere like that, but I have heard from people that the establishment would sometimes have 'mistakes' with their tip out and it would take them weeks to get it straightened out.

  10. Cash..so the waitress doens't have to wait for the money

  11. i do my best to always leave cash. i'm always afraid the waiter/waitress will not receive their tip. i try my best to always have a little extra cash on hand.

as for your third question: only a waiter/waitress would be able to answer faithfully.
