have seen,you have to pay.A co worker who is also trying to get a goverment grant,says there are areas where you can get them for not having to pay any money?Is that true?Any suggestions,ideas?

Never pay someone to get grants or scholarships for you.  These are almost always either scams, or useless services.

For school, you want to apply through the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  It is called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid simply because it is that - FREE.

List your school(s) you intend to enroll at on the FAFSA and they will receive an electronic copy of your application.  From there they can determine your eligibilty for grants and loans.
