a chinese buffet, or other buffet style restaurants, where the server brings you your beverages, but you go to the buffet bar to pile up your plates. my friend and i are very much in disagreement. he says they don't wait on you there, so he leaves no tip. i on the other hand, leave a tip. what is the correct rule of thumb on this subject? thanks for your answers.

  1. You should definitely leave a tip....but instead of the traditional 15%, you should instead leave approx. 10%.

  2. if you have a waitress or waiter and they do a good job then yes. if the service sux then to h**l with em

  3. I look around and see if anyone else is leaving a tip!  If the wait stuff is good, though, I'll usually leave a tip anyway, though not as much as I'd leave at a full service restaurant.

  4. I leave a tip at buffet style restaurants as long as the service is good but I don't leave as much of a tip as I would at a full-service restaurant.

  5. If a person is refilling your drinks and removing plates, then YES....leave 2 bucks.  Think about sitting there with no beverage during your mealtime and  being surrounded by plates piled with chicken bones, half- eaten rolls, and runny jello.  Please do not be cheap like your friend, reward the person passing your table and tending to your dining experience.

  6. It sort of depends.  If a wait person takes my order, and brings drinks and stuff, and takes the bill, then, yes.  If it's a cafteria style, where you pay as you enter, fill your own drinks, etc., then I usually don't.  At an ordinary sit-down restaurant I pay 20%, at a buffet style, like chinese, I leave 10%.

  7. they are waiters and waitresses wether they be at an all you can eat or not. they need to make a living and even if the service sucks they do have to clean up your dirty plates and they work long butt hours. so at least leave them like 2 bucks. its only fair if you were in their position.
