When you are growing magic mushrooms, are they supposed to spell bad?

No, you have to toss those.  You need to develop cleaner working habits if you want to be successful.  I assume they got contaminated during colonization.  You should build a glove box to do the inoculation in - it only costs like $15.  In fact, go to www.youtube.com and watch the series "let's grow mushrooms pf tek".  It's four parts and it will help you out big time.  It will show you how to grow mushrooms using the pf tek method from start to finish and you will be successful if you follow it correctly.

No a bad smell is the sign of a bacteria growth. throw them out some of the bacteria that infect sterile systems are very toxic. Having run across wild mushrooms of both the blue bruising and other varieties, mushrooms pretty much always smell like mushrooms.
