When you are sitting with three friends - do you feel like the 'leader' when you are sitting in the?

I feel like they are paying attention to me and are happy to have me there with them.

I have a rather small table, have sat with friends.  The middle person has less room, so that is more uncomfortable to me.  If space had nothing to do with it; I can't see why it would bring awkwardness to anyone.  If I knew what the subject was, and was confident, being the leader feels good.  (Unless the friends were not really friends.)
