They look like sticks or twigs sticking out of the top of the backpack. It doesn't look like their avi probe, but what do I know?

  1. Probably wands- They're for mountaineering and back country skiing to mark your route or any hazards. They are especially useful on big climbs in white out conditions, or to mark crevasses. They are usually brightly colored (if not fluorescent) with a flag on top, so you can see them from far away.

  2. Probably the avi shovels, the probes are usually collapsible and can be carried in the pack.

  3. A lot of times you will see wooden sticks in ski packs in addition to avi probes and shovels. The sticks are carried so skiers can mark checked areas or set up search grids on an avalanche field. They can also be used by the lead guide to mark crevasses or danger areas on a route when ascending.
