When you burp, does acid come up also? (Heartburn related question)?

I had heartburn about 4 weeks back and took prilosec for 8 days. That stopped the heartburn, but after 2 weeks later, i started getting gas. And excessive amounts too, not just your normal 2-3 burps.

I started taking Yakult 3 days ago (pro-biotics similar to Danone's DanActiv), to help digestion of foods. It helps. I think indigestion the problem.

I've lost 15 lbs so far by eating right (since heartburn) and staying away form alcohol (I'm 23) and plan on loosing another 20. But I'm still burping like crazy.

The other night I may have over-eaten (or eaten more than usual) and the gas kept on going. I woke up with my throat burning just last night. I guess back to elevating again. But this hasn't happened before...probably only because i over-ate. No more of that..

  1. You could have hiatal hernia.  This is more reason to lose weight and not eat toward evening (which I'm sure you find nearly impossible).  And great reason not to drink booze - that will help you in every way.

Check out the Atkins diet - you can get a used copy of of "New Diet Revolution" for next to nothing off of Amazon.  Atkins cures a lot of things including heartburn - acid reflux.  Oddly enough, a lot of heartburn and stomach troubles are allergies!!  That Tagement medicine - yes - it's an anti-histamine tablet.

Lots to know about histamines and allergy.  And the Atkins has you eating foods which people don't tend to be allergic to.  So lots of problems go away.

  2. Acid only occurs with a burp when you have what is called REFlUX. Contact your doctor and ask for Nexium, or Protonix. Over the counter in the store there is Famotidine.

  3. I agree with OnlyMatch. But I need to add my own 2 cents of my personal experience and what worked for me.  I've been dealing with this very issue for 6 months. Have strictly kept out the acid reflux causing foods for that long. But it wasn't until I took out gluten, 4 months ago, that i got considerable relief but not all. You may not have a gluten sensitivity but ironically most people do. My reflux had decreased but my burps had stayed the same.

By doing a lot of food testing and keeping a diary...for me it boils down to sugars.  Whenever I would eat a meal with sugars I'd get burping with the reflux. My intestinal flora has been low creating a candida (yeast) situation in the gut. Yeast feeds off of sugars, all sugars not just what you put in your coffee, but the starchy ones that turn to sugars quickly (corn, white rice) fruit is also in that category. As soon as I took it out my burps decreased which decreased the acid reflux. This may not be your issue but it's something to think about

As an herbalist, I would include taking bitters before meals to stimulate your digestion naturally. By taking something orally that taste bitter it directly tells the brain to start gastric secretions to get ready for food. If you supplement to much with HCL and enzymes your stomach can forget to work on it's own as everything is done for it. You can buy a tincture (herbal extract) at the health food store and take about 20 drops in a little water before meals. Do not do this if you think you may have an ucler. I would try Dandelion root Tincture.

Here are some herbs to take when you are having acute symptoms like burning in the chest and you probably have esophagitis, inflammation of the esophagus, caused by the reflux of acids up the esophagus.

Chamomile tea is great for reducing inflammation. I brew a strong tea, about a quart, and drink it all day. It's amazing how well it works.

DGL capsules or chewables have Licorice in them and they help calm the stomach and sooth the tissues. I take 3 capsules before meals and 3 after. if you can find a store that has herbs in bulk, buy some slippery elm powder. I mix about a rounded spoonful in a bit of water and drink. Its a mucilage herb which means it has a gelatin feel too it when combines with water. It will coat your esophagus and take down the acid.

    Some things I do.

I eat no later then 7 for me to get to bed by 11.

Unfortunately I can't snack after that.

Coffee, alcohol and chocolate aggravate acid reflux.

I'm off gluten, all wheat products, and sugars.

I'm also taking apple cider vinegar and aloe vera juice.

    And definitely take probiotics.

Yeah it's a totally boring diet for now but I'm confident I can get back on track as I already feel it happening. I too dropped 18 lbs just by going off wheat.

    Good luck

  4. Sounds like you may also have food sensitivities. Have you read anything about "food combining"? You can get info at your local health food store. Certain foods ( ie. meat and fruit) do not combine well and make gas in the intestinal tract. If you eat your foods combined well, it is soooo much easier on the digestion ( and not hard to do at all). Your health food chart has small business sized cards to show you. ( cost a dollar). Are you eating acidophilous bifidus ( ie yogurt etc) to keep your intestinal tract balanced? This will help your digestion and gas. Also you can drink aloe vera juice to heal the digestive tract, balance the ph, and keep your bowel movements regular. It can also keep you from getting acid problems with your stomach ( like vinegar, but offers a more useful healing...not just temporary acid healing.) Also don't drink fluids while you are eating a meal because it depletes the natural digestive acids and can cause gas. (Wait a while until after each meal to drink the fluids, and drink lots of water in between meals to supress your appetite and help you lose weight. smile) Good luck!

  5. What is happening to you is happening to millions of Americans.  The problem is the LACK OF STOMACH ACID.  When you ingest food, if your stomach acid levels are too low, the food sits there and rots, putrefies, and the ferments.  This generates lots of LACTIC ACID that gives you the acid indigestion.  Because the stomach pH doesn't get low enough, the food sits in your stomach and the gas builds up pressure.  This causes the Cardio Sphincter at the top of your stomach to open and let the disgusting mass of chyme go up into your esophagus and you get "acid reflux."  The solution is NOT to take the antacids, like prilosec because that STOPS your NORMAL DIGESTION PROCESS!  Now you have toxins being dumped into your intestines and that is where you are getting the constipation!  Your liver becomes toxic and your lymphatic system gets whacked out and you are not eliminating properly.

The solution is simple, but it is NOT antacids.  As you age, and eat cooked foods, etc., your body produces less and less stomach acid, making it more and more difficult to get good digestion to happen.  This is why we start putting on weight around the belly and women around the hips and thighs because the undigested digusting mess sits in the intestines and eventually becomes stored fat that is toxic.

You can solve this by taking Betaine HCL and an HCL Activator after each meal.  The typical pills you buy in stores is not good Betaine.  They take way too long to break down and will not do the job.

Go to:  (800) 370 - 3447 and order the following:

Betaine HCL --- take 3 if under 150 pounds and 4 if over 150 after each meal.

HCL Activator --- Take 1 for every 2 Betaine you take after each meal.

Digest --- Take 1 DURING the meal and 2 if you eat meat.

Probiotic -- Take one in the morning and one in the evening.

If you do the above, you will not get acid indigestion or acid reflux.  Problem solved.

    good luck
