I've noticed that whenever I drive by a gas station,it says something like: $ 3.43 and then right next to the top of the the 3 or whatever number it is,it says 9/10 of a cent. What I'm wondering is,where does the 1/10th of a cent go?

  1. it's as close as 3.44 as you can get. it's an old marketing ploy that still exists. 99 cents for a hamburger? it's like 1.12 with tax.

anyway, they 1/10 of a cent goes as profit, of course.

  2. When you get 10 gallons, that 9/10th adds 9 cents.

So $3.43 would have been $34.30

    Now it's $34.39

5 gallons would be adding 4.5 cents (probably rounded to 5)

20 gallons would add 18 cents.

  3. nowhere, 9/10ths of every cent you spend goes toward taxes, Im sure they round up if its not an even number

  4. its just like how $0.99 seems cheaper than $1.00, $3.43 9/10th still seems cheaper than $3.44.

In Canada we just use decimals instead of fractions because we pay per liter our prices are normally given in cents instead of dollars so our prices are 107.9 or 97.9.

So what you see is what you pay per gallon/liter, it just seems like less because its only a fraction of a cent (but obviously that adds up)
