When you buy music CD do they have right to charge tax?

i bought 2 cds , $12.08 each and total came $28.20

are they ripping people off?

  1. CDs are taxed just like about everything else.

    Why wouldn't they be?


  2. 16.7% sales tax seems very steap.  Are you sure you got your numbers correct?  States can enact sales taxes, so yes, in general, the collection of sales taxes is legal.  In fact, if they didn't collect it, they would be breaking the law.  But,

    -4.04 / 24.16 = 16.72%  <- seems a bit steap.

    As far as I know, the state with the highest sales tax is NJ, RI, and MS who all have 7%.  Are you definitely sure of your numbers?
