Question:

When you buy something online in New York does it get hit with sales tax?

I obviously hope it doesn't get hit by sales tax but if it does, is it the standard 8.625% or is it less? :)

For most online purchases you only pay sales tax if you are a resident in the state you are purchasing from.  So, if you live in New York State and purchase something online from a retailer who's business is in New York, then yes, you will pay sales tax.  If you were to purchase the same item from a retailer who's business is in Ohio, then you won't usually pay sales tax.  If you purchase from a large company, like Best Buy, Wal-mart, etc. online that have a store in virtually every state then you will also pay sales tax.
