When you count cards at a casino?

if you are joining mid-shoe/deck, figure out what the count is, but don't openly ask. you should know by figuring out a system with a team of your buddies.

I'd always start at zero. Many casinos use multiple decks in a game to try and confuse anyone trying to count the cards, and to deliberately confuse anyone joining the table.

You typically wait for a fresh shoe and start at zero, however if you have found a way to find the count after the cards have alreayd been dealt and restacked in the discard tray, you should do that, also please share with me your technique in doing so.

Also if your asking this question to begin with, you dont know enough about the fundamentals of the card couting theory to be placing any bets, so dont place them ya hear?
