When you eat at a restaurant, what kind of tipper are you?

Do you have a set amount or percentage that you always leave for your server? What are some things that make you tip less than normal, or more than normal? Do you tip more at lunch or less? Do you tip more at a chain restaurant, or at a privately owned restaurant? Feel free to let me know what you really like and what makes you crazy about the service you receive when you go out to eat.   1. I tip according to the customer service. I think customer service in this country (USA) has hit rock bottom. I don't understand why people can't be polite especially if they are working for tips...I tip anywhere between 15-30% but if I don't have good service I will only leave about 8%. I believe that if you decide to work as a server and you are fully aware that part of your pay will be coming from tips then you should do your job and do it to the best of your ablitily. Then hopefully the patron should pay you accourdingly.


  2. Um depending on what I order than it varies. usually for dinner i leave like $10

    If it's lunch I might leave between $5-7

    but that's if they were deserving of it... a pleasant attitude goes a long long way.

    There service can be less than good, but if their attitude is sweet and nice, and they are talkative and pleasant I will still tip them like if their service was great.

    Now a girl or boy with an attitude will get a note and maybe a dollar... if they are lucky

  3. I'm a person that loves to tip. i work for a living also. my salary doesn't rely on tips. I tip the people that wait on me by their attitude. What I tip depends on the service I receive. I've been known to tip more than what the bill is. Never said that I wasn't stupid.

  4. I always do 20% unless they really suck. I used to be a waitress / bartender and sometimes it sucked...especially when you worked your butt off and people only left you a 15% tip.

    I tip the same at both lunch or dinner....same no matter what type of restaurant...

  6. I typically tip between 15 and 20%.  The tip goes down if the service is poor, especially if I have a hard time leaving once down.  Making me wait to pay is the most common reason the tip drops below 10% (if it's an unreasonable delay).

    Exceedingly good service will net a greater than 20% tip.  This would happens when the service went well above and beyond normal expectations.

    Cute waitresses that flirt with me will probably get a little more tip than surly guys. :-)

    The restaurant itself is never the issue.  It's entirely about the service.

  7. Maybe I'm 'ol fashion but I stick to 15% as a default percentage; it takes exceptional service to get 20%....and I don't believe paying tip on the tax. That is a true ripoff.

    I'm not in the game of paying the server's wages. That is not what a tip is all about.

  8. I dont tip as much at fast food ish places, like steak n shake. But i always leave atleast 5 at bigger resturaunts. I think as long as my order is correct, and they check in to fill up my drink, they diserve a good tip.

    and if i ask them to bring me somthing extra, like ketchup, i want in withith a few minutes before the food im eating gets cold.

  11. I'm usually always a 20%er or more...in today's economy it just doesn't seem like enough....but I usually have decent to great service, so it hasn't been an issue in a long time. The way I see it is if they are only making $3 to $4 an hour, and my family of 4 is sitting there for an hour, I should at least be able to give them at least $10 or get out quicker so they can reload.

  12. i'm usually overly generous. lunch of dinner doesn't matter. i feel like it is based on the service i receive and i'm in a service industry, so i appreciate the little extra attention and i'm willing to reciprocate.

  13. When I get great service I tip well. If not I will give according to how I feel at the time. If the service is not good I will not go back. And I will put them on the internet as bad news.

  15. depends on the server really. i have left no tip before and will continue to do so if the service is really that bad.  also I've left a 15 dollar tip on a thirty dollar order.  I'm very generous but don't appreciate being made to wait for ten minutes to get a simple drink.

  16. I usually tip about 20% unless the waiter is rude or if the service is really bad. I'll tip more if the waiter is really friendly and helpful, or if there is really good service. I tip the same at lunch. I tip the same at any kind of restaraunt.

    If the waiter is rude and/or ignoring the table I am at it usually really annoys me

    As a former recipient of tip wages, I must say.. Those servers work for 3.53 an hour (last type I checked) They do allot of work that had nothing to do with tippable wages (In tourist areas this should be illegal) but in a regular area it has to be that way. .....

    To all you lousy tipping losers, (Thnk About It) if a person is working at a wage well below the minimum wage...... TIP, TIP, Tip........ But, never tip if you recieve anything less than good service. (*although, I do)

    Good service means letting you know what is happening woth your order, I a server abandons you and tells you nothing and you wait for an hour for service ((((DO NOT TIP)))) If however the server is appologetic and keeps your drinks full (((TIP BIG)))

  19. I like people who wait on me and make me feels as if my happiness is their first concern. That the waiters and waitress are knowledgable of the menu as well as the wine and beer menu and bring my food out as soon as possible. I either tip between 15 % and 20 %.

  20. I worked as a server for years so I understand where you are coming from. I typically tip 20% or more if service is fantastic. If I get less than stellar it's around 15%. It doesn't matter what type of restaurant it is as long as it is full service. Things that cause me to tip less are not having a drink refill while I'm in the middle of eating. Being completely ignored because the server is too busy talking to co workers and not reconcileing  my check when I am ready to leave. Personally I just want a server to smile, be close by and aware when I need them and thank me and invite me back when I am finished. There are a lot of restaurants to choose from, treat me well and I will return and isn't that what customer service is all about?

I tip more than most people, regardless of the type of restaurant.  I learned that from the times my super annoying friends and I would go to Dennys as high schoolers.  If you tip well, they will forgive you your obnoxious, high school ways!  I still go to that Dennys when I go home, and the waiters still remember me and even remember my usual order!!!

    I don't think there is any excuse to ever be rude or petty when it comes to how you treat a waiter.  The only time I have not tipped well (I actually refused to tip, and almost refused to pay) was when the waiter stood there and stared at our table and, even after an hour, had not once refilled our coffees or taken our orders.  He was quickly fired, though, because he had a widespread reputation for such behaviour.  (That was post-high school, late night, very slow business, so he had no excuse.  He was actually, very likely, stoned--you should have seen him!)

  22. I have been a server. I tip very well for excellent service.  I tip the same for all meals...but it is based on the service.  If it is good service, usually 10-12 percent.  If it is excellent service, 20% or better.  If it is horrible service...most of the time it is nothing.

  23. I don't tip. People expect a tip for doing their job right. Taking your order and picking it up and bring it to your table isn't that hard. Plus that's the job they were hired to do. Doing their job and doing it right deserves extra money? Why?
