In the US people usually have the fork in there left hand, and the knife in the right, than after they cut the food, they switch the fork to the right hand.

I am from the US and have made this observation, and read up on it. It came up in a phone conversation, and my friend was telling me that everybody keeps the fork in the left hand, and doesn't switch. I told him he was wrong, and people do that in Europe.

Do you switch hands with the Fork, and are you from the US or Europe. And by "from" I mean raised, not born, but raised, that's what from means.

  1. It is proper manners to cut your food with your fork in your left hand, then set your knife down, and continue eating.  If you are left handed-you do not need to switch to your right hand...you just have to make sure you are holding it the correct way.  You can't keep your finger down towards the tongs like you had it when you cut your food, you have to turn the fork over, more like a scoop.

If you are right handed you do need to switch...I Think the big deal is how you HOLD the fork after you cut...not with what hand.

    Good luck!

  2. i'm american and i guess i do. i never noticed before

  3. I think it is because most people are right handed and if they are cutting meat or something of that nature, then they need the fork to be in the left and knife to be held by the right hand.

  4. ah my son does that and sometimes i find my self doing that too

  5. I am American and I do switch my fork. I am right handed so maybe that has something to do with it.

  6. no i dont

my dad is one big freak when it comes to table manners and i would get in trouble if i dont use my knife and fork properly
