It really doesn't matter. Some guys don't even put in the flight number. It isn't necessary. Any canned routes in the FMC are based upon city pairs, not upon flight numbers.

I f you mean thru the MCDU i'm not really sure but i think I never saw pilots enter flt no. anymore.

you enter the ICAO code. Entering the wrong code will get an error message when you log on to datalink.
