Question:

When you get a car will the dealership run your license?

Me and a friend was wondering if the car dealership runs a person's drivers license before getting a car. When I say run a driver's license I mean like check for the driving history or if the person has a suspended license. Also do you have to have insurance before you drive the car off the lot? I know a person has to have liability but does that mean they run your license for that? I guess what I'm asking is if you had a suspended license and a whole lot of unpaid tickets would the dealership not give you a car because of your driving record?

  1. No the dealership does not urn you license I have purchased a car before without them even checking my license. This may be different from state to state I am in TX. But MOST dealerships do require to see you insurance card before you leave the lot and some even have you add the vehicle to the policy before you leave even though you really have 30 days from the purchase date to add the vehicle to the policy. So no just because you have a suspended license and a whole lot of tickets does not mean that you cannot go and buy a new or used car dealerships care about MONEY....not about the status of your license.

  2. Yes, you have to have insurance before you can drive the car off the lot.  If you are attempting to finance the purchase, there is an excellent chance your unpaid tickets will show up there.  Of course, to get insurance you need to show a valid license, so...see the problem there?  The dealer may not check, but the insurance company will.

  3. I don't know if they will actually run your license through a police database or check see if you are suspended, they will want to make a copy of it though.

You don't need insurance to drive the car off the lot, when I bought my first car, I was covered under the dealerships insurance. Not sure how common it was, but I was given a few days to get my own insurance. So when you buy the car, you will need to go straight to the insurance company and set that up.

If you are finacing the car, most places want full coverage on the car. Liability is mainly when you own it.

This is just my thought, I would imagine the dealership wanting to protect themselves too, but I think they would be more apt to sell the car to anyone, because if you sign the deal, and you get pulled over and can't drive, its not their fault. So I could see them selling you the car.

  4. Yes you have to have insurance when you drive a $25,000 vehicle off the dealership lot...................??
