Question:

When you get a filling do you usually feel pain during the procedure?

Every time I get a filling the dentist gives me a shot of novocaine and it only seems to numb my cheek and gum some but not the nerves in my tooth. This wasn't just at a single dentist, but at three separate dentists, so I doubt it could be because of a bad dentist. I was just wondering if anyone else feels ALOT of pain during the procedure of getting a filling.

  1. Your nerve might be at a somewhat different spot than where the anesthetic was placed....some people have that situation, and you should let the dentist know this has happened so they can test the numbness, and do additional shots if necessary.

  2. If you have nerve chamber entry from the cavity,  you need to have a root canal. Upper dental work is usually not as painful as lower dental work. For some reason, the shots work better on top. And you may need SEVERAL shots before you get fully numb. My dentist does no less than four usually. If you have a dentist that does not LISTEN to you, move on. Mine won't DARE perform any work until I give the okay.

  3. u r not supposed to feel alot of pain.

its supposed to be painless or a close to painless as can be

  4. It never hurts me when I get a filling. I have had some cavities that were pretty deep too. The first time I had a filling it hurt, but the few times after that I couldn't even feel a thing. I switched dentists and he was much better and a lot more gentle, so maybe thats why :)
