when you give a person a personal check. what does it mean when the person you gave it too their signature is on top and there is someone elses on the bottom?.

  1. Was the person a minor? When One my grandparents send my kids a check for their birthday I have to sign their name and then mine under it.


  2. They turned it over to someone else.  A 3rd party deposit.

This is what is known as a "third party check" this is when the original person the check is made payable to/ payee signs the check over to someone else to cash, deposit, etc --- the #1 reason most people do this is because they don't have a bank account and the person they sign the check over to does, or sometimes they may owe the other person money and instead of cashing it themselves they give the check directly to that person the is owed

    FYI Most banks or checking cashing places do not except third party checks because of potential fraud!!!

  4. They're signing it over to the other person either to cash or deposit.

  5. It means they gave it to someone else to cash for them.
