When you go on unemployment, who pays for it?

I am asking because I have been working since I was 16, and for the first time ever I had to file for unemployment.

  1. you probably already did.  All the time that you have been employed, you have been contributing.  Your eligibility is partly based on length of previous employment and income level during that employment.  Basically, unless you are have a chronic reliance on unemployment, you pay in more than you ever receive.


  2. You do. You have paid a little bit with each paycheck. You are entitled to it. You are not taking money from other people. This is your right.

  3. All employers pay a small percent of thei payroll into an unemployment fund.  That money is used to pay benefits.

    When the government extends benefits over 26 weeks, then the taxpayer is paying it.

    Most people spend less than 10 weeks on unemployment before finding a new opportunity.
