It's illegal to drink alcohol under 18, so is it in church as well?

  1. I've never had even a sip of wine at a catholic mass.  Was I sitting in the wrong section?  ;-)

I think only the priest gets to drink wine, not the congregation.

Isn't it in the Protestant churches that the little platter of "thimbles" filled with wine are passed around?   I've never seen wine drinking at a catholic mass.... and I've been to many.

  2. I like ur question. You'll have to ask a lawyer though.

  3. Children as young as 6 or 7 may drink from the cup.  It's not enough to do any harm.

  4. No. But you do have to wait until some test I think.

  5. No. Any age... But, then again, when New Years rolls around and many families give their teens their first taste of wine, will you go to their houses to regulate them?

  6. The Church can trump that particular rule of law for religious purposes.  Also, I have known of a Catholic Church in the United States (drinking age is 21) where they were holding services in a public school.  And the school was forced to allow them to have storage space for storing alchol on school premises.  It caused quite a stir.

  7. 19 here

And I know for a fact that you have to be 19 to drink the wine in the churches around here

  8. No.  Jesus doesn't card.

It's only a small amount.  Barely a sip.  And the body of Christ is a little bland.

  9. <<When you go to a Catholic Church service do you have to be over 18 to drink the wine?>>

Nope. Once one has received "first" Holy Communion, usually at some point in grade school, one can receive both Body and Blood of Christ.

<<It's illegal to drink alcohol under 18, so is it in church as well?>>

Not illegal - because such a law would violate the First Amendment - freedom to Worship.

<<Would I only be offered a piece of bread and no wine?>>

Larger parishes will typically offer the Body of Christ only, for logistical reasons. If you favor receiving the Body and Blood at Communion, you might want to visit a Catholic Mass at a smaller parish.

<<Just the body and not the blood? The baker made god. Is he tastey?>>

    Whatever that means....

  10. Unfortunately, there is no minimum age to drink the kool-aid.... er I mean wine.

  11. It doesn't matter, it's not wine, but the actual Blood of Christ. As long as you are in communion with the Church and you are in a state of grace and have recieved the required Sacraments, you can receieve the Blood of Christ with the Body of Christ.

  12. I do not think so, as it is in the presence of our Lord God Himself!

  13. not if you had your first communion.  drinking wine during communion is a part of the religion and so falls under the first amendment (the free practice thereof).  and because it doesnt harm the participants or society outside of church, the government doesnt interfere.  and its only a sip.

  14. seperation of church and state slick

  15. No, in most Roman Catholic Churches, you can be of any age to have received first communion and receive the wine.

  16. I went as a visitor to a church and they used grape juice instead of wine.

  17. First of all it is not bread and wine. It is the holy consecrated body and blood of Jesus Christ our Savior. If you have received the Sacrament of Holy Communion as instructed by the Catholic Church you are eligible to receive Communion (Body and Blood of Christ). This usually happens to Catholic children around 7-8 years of age.
