I once checked out a website and got the message "You are never anonymous on the internet, you are using computer number e4g67h43\" or words to that effect.

  1. No. That is a bunch of BS.  It can record your IP.  But even then you can hide that by using a proxy.

The only other way is if you allow activeX to run in the background and take your info.  Highly unlikely though.

But "e4g67h43\".  That is a lie.

  2. The number of the computer meaning the MAC Address? No, its not possible. The only thing they are able to look at is the broadcast IP Address of your system which is different then the IP Address if your system is behind a good firewall.Anything other then that is irrelevant..........

  3. They can track your IP address because you are accessing their server, in the same way that you can look at your firewall log and see who has accessed or tried to access your computer.

It doesn't mean they know who you are but it is easy for them to tell where your provider is. It's used a lot for instance by the BBC who won't let anyone use live video streams outside of the UK. However, you can use a proxy address which will hide your address (almost) completely.

    Don't worry :-)

  4. Identifiers from the machine are always visible on sites visited. These are logged in case you break the law. Your ISP keeps a list of all the connections you make against your account for the same reason.
